ID Theft

What is Identity Theft?

Identity theft is a crime. Identity theft and identity fraud are terms used to refer to all types of crime in which someone wrongfully obtains and uses another person’s personal data in some way that involves fraud or deception, typically for economic gain. The Web pages, listed above, are intended to explain why you need to take precautions to protect yourself from identity theft. Unlike your fingerprints, which are unique to you and cannot be given to someone else for their use, your personal data especially your Social Security number, your bank account or credit card number, your telephone calling card number, and other valuable identifying data can be used, if they fall into the wrong hands, to personally profit at your expense.

  1. Inspect your credit report.

Credit reports contain information about you, including what accounts you have and your bill paying history.

    • The law requires the major nationwide consumer reporting companies – Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion – to give you a free copy of your credit report each year if you ask for it.
    • Visit www.AnnualCreditReport.com or call 1-877-322-8228, a service created by these three companies, to order your free credit reports each year.
    • You also can write: Annual Credit Report Request Service, P.O. Box 105281, Atlanta, GA. 30348-5281.
  2. Inspect your financial statements.

Review financial accounts and billing statements regularly, looking for charges you did not make.

We hope the websites, listed above, will help provide you with information you need to prevent identity theft.
